The Scotsman Electric Scooter : review / crowfundingCategory: Crowdfuning
[b]I regularly seek new products on crowdfunding platform because I really enjoy trying out new and innovative products. In the last couple of years, I have discovered some great products and shared detailed reviews on some of those products while sometimes some of those products completely failed but at least, I have been pretty honest about it. [b][b][b][b]Up to a couple of years ago electric scooters were bulky, unattractive, unpractical and seen as a nuisance for many pedestrians and drivers in cities. Things have changed, you now see many electric scooters in cities and they are no longer considered as bulky unattractive products, they are probably still seen as a nuisance for some but not because of the product, it's rather because of the ones using them. More convienient than a bike or a car for short distance, the electric scooter has become part of our cityscape.[b][b][b][b]
[b][b]Super Early bird
[b][b]There will be a super early bird rebate for the first ones to order, it will be a BIG rebate so if you're interested in that product, you can already register on the official web site to secure your spot in the queue.[b][b]Get your Scotsman Electric Scooter here: Scotsman Electric Scooter
The Scotsman Electric Scooter?[b][b]I don't know how they came to that name, I don't really see the link between Scots and this product but ok let's put this aside for the moment. Here is an overview of the features.[b][b][b][b][b]Batteries[b][b]The Scotsman Electric scooter has two removable batteries that you can easily remove and charge at home or in the office. Those batteries can be charged through a USB-C cable which means that even your laptop could be used to charge your scooter. [b][b][b][b][b]Screen/GPS[b][b]The Scotsman Electric Scooter has a screen directly integrated into the handlebars and we're not talking about a big bulky console, the screen is litteraly inside the scooter body. The screen offers the possibility to plan your route through GPS, check your speed and see how much battery is left. You can also record your ride and I suppose you will be able to synchronize this type of data with your smartphone.[b][b][b][b][b]Camera[b][b]A small 1080p camera is also available, it will allow you to record your ride or act as a dashcam.[b][b][b][b][b]Unlocking[b][b]The Scotsman is unlocked by your presence, there are no details yet about how this will work, I'll update it later.[b][b][b][b][b]Folding[b][b]Using a scooter is nice but once you arrive at your destination, you need to put it somewhere safe. The Scotsman has been designed to be folded in a way that you can take it everywhere with you.[b][b][b][b][b]Some other secret perks[b][b]I will be able to reveal some of the other unique features of this product after the launch which is scheduled on May 26th.[b][b][b][b]
Early bird rebate[b]The Scotsman will be made available on Indiegogo as from May 26th. There will be an early bird price for a limited quantity of scooters so if you're interested in this kind of product and ready to accept the risk associated with crowdfunding, you should not wait.[b][b]
Risk?[b]Crowdfunding is not a sure thing, campaigns can fail, manufacturers can fail, there are scams, ... You should always be careful before funding a project. This project is not risk-free but the risk is probably lower than for a new company. This product will be manufactured by a company that has already successfully launched a product, it has the technology and probably the financials to make it work. The risk still exists but is probably lower than the average new product on Indiegogo.[b][b]
Target audience[b]Who is the target audience for such a product? It will probably appeal more to people living in cities or commuting to cities for work. The battery range will define how far you can go, speed will also be important but size/weight will probably be equally important especially if you plan to combine public transport with this electric scooter.[b][b][b][b]
My opinion/review[b]On paper this Scotsman Electric Scooter is very interesting. I like the idea of removable batteries that you can charge anywhere but it could become a challenge for battery range and I'm also wondering how much time you would need to fully charge the battery.[b][b][b]I also like the idea of having a screen and dashcam integrated into the structure of the scooter instead of using a smartphone or an external device. [b][b][b]From what I can see from the early pictures, the design will probably be an important element to attract buyers. The design looks futuristic and sleek.[b][b][b]What are the challenges? There are always challenges linked to new products like this: battery range, safety, robustness, handling, ... I'm looking forward to see the product in action![b][b]I will update this article at launch and later on with all the information I can get. Stay tuned![b][b]
Update 5/26/2021[b]This is it, the project is launched on Indiegogo and has reached 200% of the goal in less than a day, the media coverage is pretty great too. [b][b][b]As promised, here's some more info I wasn't allowed to reveal before the launch:[b][b]- the scooter will be produced by the same company (Arevo) that launched the Superstrata on Indiegogo. The Superstrata is a bike printed by a 3D printer and the campaign was one of the most funded in 2020. The DNA of the Superstrata can be found in this project as the scooter will also be printed in carbon fibre. The scooter will therefore be lighter, stronger and can take on a more aesthetic shape.[b]- The scooter will be available in 3 versions: Scotsman 500, Scotsman 1000 and Scotsman 2000 (see specifications below).[b]- As with the Superstrata, the scooter can be printed to fit your body size perfectly.[b]- there will be several types of battery including a "performance" version to increase autonomy and speed[b].[b]- you will be able to use the battery to charge other devices via USB-C (e.g. laptop, phone,...)[b][b][b][b]Here is the comparison between the three models:[b][b][b]As you can see, it is mainly the engine power that distinguishes these different scooters, the most powerful one can reach a speed of 75km/h! [b][b][b][b]Competition/Alternatives[b][b]There are many other such products on the market, there is even another electric scooter on Indiegogo. These scooters will all get you from point A to point B, the difference with the Scotsman is the carbon fiber construction, the ability to customize the size, removable batteries and performance.[b][b][b][b]What about the price?[b][b]Price is an important element in the purchase decision and this new toy from Arevo is quite expensive with a price that will vary depending on the model. Fortunately it is possible to buy it in pre-sale with a very large discount on Indiegogo. Beware, as I mentioned above, buying on Indiegogo always involves a risk but the risk for this campaign is lower than for a product developed by a company without experience.[b][b]
