Xiaodu Smart Buds: test / review

Xiaodu Smart Buds: test / review (with promo code)
Category: Connected objects

[b]I don't often test phone accessories as they are not products I can test in depth like a phone but when the opportunity arises, I integrate them into my daily life to see what they are worth. Last year I had tested bluetooth in-ear headphones from Elephonee and this time I'm going to test headphones from Xiaodu which will be under the £20 mark and even less with an introductory offer.[b][b]

Introductory offer

[b]The price is a strong argument for these Xiaodu headphones, the introductory price is around 20€ (depending on the country of delivery) and you can take advantage of it with the following link:[b]Xiaodu Smart Buds $19.99[b][b]

Xiaodu?

[b]I had never heard of this brand before but as I often write, the Chinese industry is a bottomless pit. Every time I think I've covered it all, I always discover something new. Xiaodu is a brand marketed by the Chinese giant Baidu and if you don't know Baidu, you should know that Baidu can be considered as the Chinese Google. So these headphones are not produced by a new manufacturer that will eventually disappear as is often the case, expect the product line to expand and Baidu to get a piece of the pie pretty quickly.[b][b]

Unpacking

[b]
[b]The Xiaodu Smart Buds box contains a carrying case that also allows you to charge the headphones, a USB cable and a manual in several languages.[b][b][b][b]

Overview

[b]
[b]The Xiaodu Smart Buds have a very special design. The case is very rounded and the headphones are shaped like the droids' heads in Star War. Earphones are often equipped with a cushion to put them in the hollow of the ear, this is not the case for these earphones. I must admit that I was a bit apprehensive when I first saw them, I thought that these headphones were not going to be very comfortable but this is not the case, they fit more easily in the ear than my Elepods.[b][b]
[b]Contrary to its appearance, it is the smooth part that comes into contact with your ear canal, so there is nothing entering the ear canal. The ear cushions are useless here and the headphones fit much better in my ear than my previous headphones which tended to move around because of the cushions.[b][b]
[b]The headphones charge from the LEDs at the bottom of the headphones, simply inserting them into the charging case as with most other headphones of this type.[b][b][b][b]

Features

[b]These Xiaodu Smart Buds headphones don't stop at sound delivery, they offer many other features but to get the most out of them you need to download the Xiaodu app which unfortunately is not available for Belgium, so I wasn't able to configure the headphones. The configuration allows for example to assign a function to each earphone, so you can trigger the chosen function by simply pressing. As I was unable to configure the headphones, the default function is to skip to the next song on Spotify or Deezer.[b][b][b][b][b]ANC - active noise cancellation[b][b]My previous headphones had a fairly effective noise cancellation system and you could clearly hear the device being triggered. I didn't feel this difference with the Xiaodu, the cancellation is certainly there but the decibel count is probably lower than what I had with the Elepods.[b][b][b]Sound quality[b][b]The manufacturer emphasises the audio quality, I think all manufacturers do but in practice this is not necessarily the case. I was positively surprised by the quality of the highs of these Xiaodu Smart Buds. Low tones are well rendered but it is especially in the highs and vocals that I notice a difference compared to my Elepods.[b][b][b]Note taking[b][b]The Xiaodu Smart Buds can act as a dictaphone and transcribe a conversation into text, this feature is available in English and Chinese. I was not able to test this feature as not having access to the app, I was unable to trigger this feature.[b][b][b]Touch control[b][b]By default, it is possible to skip to the next song by touching one of the headphones twice. This works very well. If you have access to the app you will be able to change this feature and replace it the feature of your choice from those offered by the app.[b][b][b][b]There is always a bit of latency in the bluetooth signal but the good headphones have such low latency that you don't perceive any delay in the sound anymore. If I watch a YouTube video with the headphones on, I haven't noticed any lag between the lips and the sound. [b][b]

Conclusion

[b]I don't have the possibility to test headphones in as much detail as a phone, I for example don't have the possibility to measure the sound quality like I do on smartphones. My conclusion will therefore be subjective.[b][b]What I liked about these headphones:[b]- position in the ear, no need to push anything into your ear canal[b]- the headphones fit very well, you can shake your head without dropping them[b]- the sound is very fine, the highs are particularly well rendered[b]- the touch-sensitive part of the earphone responds quickly[b][b]What I didn't like:[b]- the application is not available for Belgium, so I don't have access to all the features[b]- the noise cancellation seems weaker than on my Elepods[b][b]I haven't tested the battery life yet because I wanted to publish the article before the product launch and for the moment I only have 2 to 3 hours of listening time. I will continue to use these headphones instead of my Elepods anyway as the sound quality is better and the positioning in my ears is much better. If I notice anything else, I'll add it to the article.[b][b]Update: after 3 hours of listening I had 10% battery left, I didn't put the earphones back in their pouch.[b][b]
