Umidigi Bison Pro : test / review

Umidigi Bison Pro : test / review
Category: Smartphones

I have been following the Umidigi brand for a few years and this Umidigi Bison Pro is the 6th phone from this brand that I have tested. Umidigi has evolved a lot in 2 years and today offers models that represent credible alternatives to better known brands. I tested the Umidigi Bison (without the "pro") in 2020 and got a lot of positive feedback after testing it, it was the first rugged phone that had a mainstream design there while this kind of phone is usually quite unattractive. Umidigi returns with a new version of their Bison by declining a pro version which differs on quite a few elements from the basic version. [b][b] The Umidigi Bison Pro is a bit more powerful than the previous version, the level of finish has improved a little further but from a purely technical point of view both phones are very similar. With the first Bison, Umidigi had made the universe of the rugged smartphone more accessible, this is even more the case with the Bison Pro because this phone is really close to a classic smartphone with just a few additional protections. I even wonder if we can consider that the Umidigi Bison Pro is a real rugged smartphone. [b][b] If you regularly break your phones by mistake or accident, the Umidigi Bison Pro could represent a more solid alternative without having to carry a brick in your pocket. Structure of my tests

I test the phones according to a pre-established structure (see below) to provide you with as much information as possible. Unfortunately, this takes a long time. Some tests like network performance tests take several days and for photo tests I sometimes have to wait until the weather is suitable to take pictures in good conditions. I am therefore obliged to publish the tests step by step, so I invite you to come back if the test is not complete at the time of your visit.[b]
How are my tests different from others on the web?

- I usually buy the devices with my own money, so price is just as important as you are!
- I keep the devices for at least a few weeks (sometimes more) to see what they are worth in real conditions.
- I answer (when possible) your questions to help you decide before you buy
- no one pays me to do these reviews, so I'm completely neutral and independent...
- My pages are not filled with ads

Timeline

September 22, 2021 delivery of the Umidigi Bison Pro from China (by the manufacturer). Start of the test.[b]

Why this phone?

I test most Chinese smartphones of well-known brands but sometimes I go a few deviations to test alternative brands like Doogee, Oukitel or Umidigi. I made some great discoveries while testing these smartphones, but it was with Umidigi that I saw the biggest progress. Umidigi has found its audience with a fairly aggressive price positioning and over time they have managed to market better quality phones without affecting the selling price too much. [b][b] The Umidigi Bison Pro is at the crossroads of two worlds with on one side consumer smartphones which must also please the eyes and on the other side rugged smartphones with their rudimentary design and their excessive weight. I see this model as an attempt to make the world of rugged smartphones more accessible to the general public without having to compromise too much. The Umidigi Bison GT is heavy (265gr) but it is clearly not the heaviest in this category. Its screen is protected by a thick border but here too Umidigi has managed to keep a large screen with a diagonal of 6.3 inches with a resolution of 1080x2400px. Umidigi has always been generous in battery capacity and storage space, this model is no exception to the rule with a 5000mAh battery and 128Gb storage capacity. [b][b] All the conditions are therefore met to succeed in the bet of selling robust smartphones to a larger public.[b]

Unpacking

Umidig seems to have completely changed its positioning in recent months. When I saw the yellow box in its packaging, I thought I had been sent a Poco. This bright yellow is mainly used at Poco, it is the first time that I see this color at Umidigi. The format of the box is also a bit unusual, but it is often the case for rugged smartphones. [b][b] The packaging is fairly standard, the box contains the phone, a small manual, a charger and a USB cable. [b]

Finish

If there was a competition for the most beautiful rugged smartphone, the Umidigi Bison Pro would undoubtedly have a chance of winning. This phone is still a little too big to be mistaken for a normal smartphone but the protection of the phone is much less visible than on other models like the Doogee or Oukitel that I tested. [b][b]
Seen from the side we realize that the phone is not very balanced because of the notch at the bottom of the phone which tilts the phone to the side. Usually it is the photo sensor that causes this kind of problem, this is not the case here. There is an unprotected USB C port on the bottom of the phone, waterproof phones usually have a rubber or silicone cover there and it's not very convenient to insert and remove a USB cable. I'm assuming Umidigi insulated the USB port rather than covering it with a shield. [b][b]
On the right side we find the volume buttons, the power button and a customizable button. The fingerprint sensor is on the other side, this is a very strange choice as this placement makes it difficult to use the fingerprint sensor. The buttons are on the other hand housed in a metallic coating which gives a more premium appearance to the phone. [b][b]
The photo sensor is fairly well integrated into the back of the phone, it stands out quite visibly but it is not the one that makes the phone rock when it is is lying on the back.
The 6.3-inch screen takes up just over 70% of the front surface, significantly less than a traditional phone but it's quite comparable to other rugged smartphones. The border is clearly visible, it is the same for the notch at the top of the screen but I find that it is quite acceptable for this kind of phone. [b][b]
The corners of the phone are protected by a solid plastic protection, this gives a rougher appearance to the phone but it must be well protected to be able to belong to the category of smartphones robust. Umidigi has chosen not to use silicone protection to protect the openings, so you do not have to peel off a silicone strip to access the jack or the USB port. You don't need a needle to open the sim drawer either (but a screwdriver might be needed) Rugged smartphones are generally quite ugly but Umidigi has managed to mitigate the brick effect of this kind of phone. The Umidigi Bison Pro is a bit thinner and lighter than most phones in this category. [b]

Specifications

[b]The information below comes from the Device Info HW application. The application provides detailed technical information about the tested phone. The Umidigi Bison Pro runs on a Mediatek architecture (CPU, GPU, GPS, etc.) like the previous model, but this is a slightly more powerful model. The screenshots below will allow you to see the detailed features of the phone. Most of the dials outside of the Mediatek architecture are unique to this phone, I haven't seen them on other phones. The phone has a barometer, gyroscope and magnetometer, it runs on Android 11 and its screen has a frequency of 60 hz. [b][b] The Umidigi Bison Pro is also equipped with an infrared thermometer to measure the temperature of objects or the temperature of your forehead. The measured temperature gives you an indication of the temperature but you should not take this temperature as a scientific measurement because there is always a small difference with reality.[b]

CPU / GPU Performance

CPU : MediaTek Helio G80
GPU : ARM Mali-G52 2EEMC2
Memory (RAM) : 4 - 8 Gb
Storage : 128 Gb
[b][b]As I indicated in the previous paragraph, this phone runs on a Mediatek architecture with a Helio G80 CPU that is also found on a number of other entry-level smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy A22, the Huawei Y9a or the Realme 6i. For the graphics part, it is based on a Mali G52 that is also found in many entry-level phones such as the Honor 9x or the Redmi Note 9. [b][b] The Umidigi Bison Pro is therefore an entry-level smartphone, it is not the phone to buy to meet a need for performance but it will offer sufficient performance for normal use.[b]

Benchmark Antutu/3DMark

I obtained a score of 179,409 points with Antutu, it is quite low compared to the selling price of the phone but a priori the target audience for this kind of phone is not looking for raw performance. [b]

[b]Gaming[b]To test the performance in game, I download the mobile PUBG game and evaluate the in-game experience, graphics level and depth of vision. This game is quite demanding and should help you evaluating the performance of a phone. This phone is not a phone intended for a gaming audience but that doesn't mean that it is not possible to play more resource intensive games like PUBG Mobile . The game works without problems, it is possible to play it but I noticed a few jerks at times. The Antutu score shows that this phone is not very powerful, so you might have to decrease the level of in-game graphics to have a perfectly smooth experience.[b]

Signal 4G (before december 2020)[b]The ability to pick up the network correctly is an essential element for a phone but it is only very rarely measured. To measure a phone's ability to pick up the network, I perform a large number of measurements on the same cells to be able to compare phones under similar conditions. The signal is measured in dBm, a value of -90dBm indicates a worse signal than -70dBm. These measurements are therefore taken under real conditions and not in a laboratory, they are not scientific but give a good indication of performance. [b][b]Network signal sensitivity rating

[b][b]Signal 4G (from December 2020)[b]I decided to change the methodology for measuring the network because I noticed that the configuration of the mobile network changes over time. This makes it more difficult to compare phones because the conditions are no longer exactly the same.[b][b]To overcome this problem, I set up a device that captures 24 hours a day about ten parameters from the mobile network (ex: cell id, rssi, rsrq, snr, frequency,...). I then place the phone next to the device for 24 to 48 hours taking the same measurements so that I can compare them. [b][b] Overview of the phones tested with this methodology[b][b]

[b][b]I took a little over 900 measurements to assess the network sensitivity of this phone and unfortunately this performance is not very good. Umidigi had nevertheless made good progress in terms of network sensitivity, I can see here a step backwards. I got an average of -104.98 dBm with the phone, it's not good score compared to other phones but if I compare it to my probe the difference is even bigger. I have an average difference of 10 dBm between the measurements of my probe and the Umidigi, it is too much. [b][b] This phone may work very well if you have good 4G network coverage but if you live in a place where this coverage is not good, you will see quality degradation more quickly than with most of the other phones in my ranking.[b][b][b]Download/Upload speed[b]To test the download speed, I have identified some 4G cells offering good performance where I test all my devices several times to see what download and upload speed they can achieve.[b]Top 10 - speed ranking in download

Note: the theoretical maximum speed of a telephone is often limited by the configuration of the mobile network and the congestion of the network at the time of the measurement. So maybe you could get a higher speed on another network

Wifi performance

To test a phone's ability to receive the network properly, I take measurements near my router and then remotely (and always at the same place). This gives me an average in dBm where a value of -90 dBm indicates poorer performance than a value at -30 dBm.[b]

GPS performance

[b]To test the quality of the GPS signal I use the Offline Maps application and I make the same train trip in pedestrian mode. Why? In pedestrian mode, the GPS does not artificially correct the signal to stick to the road, it has no markings, so you can see the actual position. I then use an application to measure the accuracy of the signal. The Umidigi uses a Mediatek architecture and very often Mediatek produces good GPS chipset. This is verified once again here with an accuracy which goes down to 1m with some fluctuations. I also checked the frequencies but saw only one frequency per network type so this phone is not dual GPS.[b][b]Top 10 - GPS accuracy ranking

From March 2020, I replaced my subjective battery test with a technical test to better measure the real behaviour of the battery. Now I test the autonomy and charging time under absolutely identical conditions. I perform several measurements, so this test alone takes several days during which I cannot use the phone for anything else.

Battery life - methodology
To test the battery life, I measure the battery consumption every minute in strictly identical conditions to be able to compare phones and also to allow you to evaluate your phone in the same conditions. I rule out any influence of applications that could interfere with the measurement. The autonomy is not linear, the battery sometimes discharges much faster at the end. This is a frustrating phenomenon but with my measurements, you will know if you need to find a charger quickly.

Battery life
The battery of the Umidigi Bison Pro has a capacity of 5000 mAh and has discharged from 100% to 1% in 610.00 minutes with 100% brightness, it has discharged from 100% to 1% in 1632.00 minutes with 50% brightness. I obtain in this way an average discharge speed of 0.16% per minute with 100% luminosity and 0.06% per minute with 50% luminosity, the consumption is therefore 8.20 mA per minute with 100% luminosity and 3.06 with 50% luminosity. To be able to compare the efficiency of the phone and its influence on the battery, you have to compare the 8.20 (or 50%) score with that of other smartphones, the figure should be as low as possible.

Charging time - methodology
To test the charging time, I always use the same charger with the same cable. I measure the charging time minute by minute to see the evolution of the charge as well as the charging speed. The charging speed of a battery is not linear, it is often faster at the beginning and slower at the end. The charger is compatible with fast charging.

Charging time
The battery of the Umidigi Bison Pro has a capacity of 5000 mAh and has been charged from 1% to 100% in 255.00 minutes. This gives me an average charging speed of 0.39% per minute and therefore an increase of 19.61 mA per minute. To compare the performance of the Umidigi Bison Pro compared to other phones, you should use the 19.61 per minute score, this score should be as high as possible.

Important note: the charging speed is not always linear, the graph below gives you an indication of the battery behaviour.

The following table lists the phones tested with the technical battery test, they are ranked in order of efficiency. A higher battery capacity should logically result in a higher battery life but it is not always the case and it does not give any indication of the efficiency of a phone.

helpHow to read these figures?
The battery capacity is an important element in determining the autonomy of a phone but it is not the only factor. A phone with a large battery may have a shorter battery life if it consumes more power. If I had to take an example from everyday life, I would use the universe of the car. If a car has a large fuel tank, it should be able to drive a longer distance unless its average fuel consumption is higher. The battery efficiency score works the same way, it should be as low as possible and represents the energy consumption of the phone. These differences in efficiency are often related to the brightness of the screen, large bright screens will tend to consume more energy and even if they have a large battery, their range will be shorter.

In summary The Umidigi Bison Pro is equipped with a 5000 mAh battery which should give you a comfortable autonomy, this is partially true. I got a battery life of 610 minutes with the screen on at 100% and a battery life of 1632 minutes with the screen on at 50%. The screen therefore does not have a linear consumption because at 100% it consumes 2.6 times more energy than at 50%. The energy efficiency is therefore not extraordinary but thanks to its 5000 mAh, the battery should allow you to last 2 days if the screen is not at 100% of its brightness.
The Umidigi Bison Pro is able to withstand a fast charge of 18W, it took me 255 minutes to charge the battery from 0 to 100%. The load is fairly linear over the first 80 percent, then the speed decreases to flatten out in the last 20 percent. It takes roughly 20 minutes to gain 10% battery at the start of charging but at the end it takes almost 50 minutes for the last ten percent. To preserve the battery, it is not advisable to charge a battery fully anyway, but in the case of this Umidigi, charging up to 90% also allows you to save a considerable amount of time.

Photo camera test

To test the quality of photos produced by a phone, I do a technical test (resolution, sharpness, chromatic aberration,...) in studio (identical conditions) to evaluate the technical part objectively. From the second half of 2020, I built my own laboratory to take completely objective technical measurements. I then take pictures in real conditions to see how the camera performs. I then evaluate these photos according to my criteria but I publish the photos so that you can evaluate the result according to your criteria.[b]

Hardware

Selfie / resolution : 16
Resolution : 48
Sensor : Sony IMX586 Exmor RS
Umidigi is used to using good photo sensors, but they also tend not to use them well. Umidigi often uses good Sony sensors but I have seen a problem with the colors on almost all of their phones. The Umidigi Bison Pro also comes equipped with a Sony sensor, so I'm curious to see if they've finally managed to get rid of this color problem. [b][b] This is not common but this model does not include an ultra wide angle sensor, it is not a big loss because these sensors do not generally produce very beautiful photos.[b]Default app[b]The default photo app used by Umidigi is arguably the closest thing to a standard Android experience. The application goes straight to the point, there aren't many options and that's okay, a phone should be kept simple, especially if it's an entry-level phone.[b][b]

Photo quality

Photo test / studio[b]
The studio test was pretty quick as I can only test one sensor and the phone doesn't offer a lot of different modes. The photo chosen for this paragraph was taken in pro mode where I adapted the exposure time to obtain a better exposed image. In automatic mode, the photo is a little underexposed, this is often the case for photos taken under artificial light. The colors are also a bit too dark. The sharpness is not extraordinary, it is better in the center and degrades slowly on the sides (see next photo), I observe a slight white halo around the areas where the sharpness has been artificially increased.
With this more technical photo I can more easily assess the quality of the photo sensor and compare it with other phones with which I took the same photo. The sharpness in the center is often stronger than in the periphery, this is partially the case here. The sharpness in the center is quite similar to that on the left of the image but the sharpness degrades sharply on the right. I cannot rule out an orientation problem, but if it does it means that the area of sharpness is very narrow. The colors seem correct to me but I still have to do a specific test for this.

Technical test / Lab

[b][b] I have not yet had the time to develop a tool to display the results of my technical tests , so I'll just post an understandable review. This test evaluates the purely technical quality of the photo sensor. [b][b] Sharpness score: medium [b] Sharpness degradation: 8% (between center and periphery) [b] Chromatic aberration: weak at the center, weak at the periphery [b] Dynamic range: average [b] Colorimetric difference: important [b] I haven't tested many phones yet in my new studio but for this Umidigi, I would summarize the result as follows: [b] - sharpness is correct without being exceptional [b] - sharpness does not diminish too strongly at the periphery [b] - no chromatic aberration [b] - ability to capture bright areas and dark in the average [b] - significant difference in color reproduction, here I suspect that this will be seen for photos taken in daylight. [b][b][b]Photo test / sunny[b]
The light conditions weren't ideal for my outdoor photo test but that's okay, it's a good way to show what a phone has in its belly. I took many pictures in mid-afternoon to mid-October, the sky was cloudy but the sun was breaking through the clouds to flood the scenery in an orange light. When you see several photos of the same place, it means that I tested the HDR and AI modes. [b][b] The photos taken outside confirm the technical verdict that I had made before taking these photos. The sharpness of the image is quite average, if you zoom the photos to 100% you will notice that the foliage is not very precise. This problem is not seen if you are viewing your photos on a phone screen or a computer screen of 25 inches or less. The colors tend too much towards red / brown, the colors are slightly too warm. The exposure level is almost fair but the dynamic range is not very wide which makes the sky completely white if it does not occupy more than half of the photo. If I give the sky more space, it's the vegetation that goes underexposure. That's a pretty common finding for phones of this type and this price range, the Umidigi Bison Pro isn't a photo champion, nor can I say it's bad. Video quality

Stabilisation[b] In the Umidigi Bison Pro price range, I have yet to find a phone that can stabilize video well. This is also the case with the Umidigi Bison Pro, the jerks of the steps are not damped and with each step, the whole video shakes. The result is not catastrophic, but we cannot speak of effective stabilization. At this price point, it is quite common.[b]Video normale conditions The Umidigi Bison Pro produces videos of average quality, most of the elements in the photo test apply here too. The coloring of the video is rather brownish and the sharpness is quite average. The dynamic range is not very wide because when I go from the sky to the vegetation, the sky quickly turns all white despite the cloud cover. The focus is fast, the exposure jumps are visible but not disturbing.[b]Video low light[b]Not yet available / tested[b][b]

Audio quality

To test the quality of the phone's audio output, I connect the device's audio output to a measuring tool, then play sounds on all frequencies and measure the differences between the original sound and the sound produced by the phone. In this way I measure the phone's ability to correctly reproduce all sounds.[b]
Frequency Respons : +0.04 / -0.17
Noise Level : -93.6
Dynamic Range : 93.7
THD : 0.00114
Intermodulation : 0.013
Stereo crosstalk : -86.7
Frequency Response[b]This test is intended to test the device's ability to correctly reproduce all frequencies. The white line in the middle of the graph is the ideal situation and the other colors come from tests on different phones. A deviation from the reference line indicates a deviation from the ideal situation. To see good sound at all frequencies, it is therefore necessary to get as close as possible to the reference line.
The Umidigi Bison Pro is able to faithfully reproduce most frequencies, but I notice a faster drop in the highs causing a small loss of quality that will probably be inaudible to most users. If I compare it with the Redmi Note 10s I get exactly the same result, so the Umidigi Bison Pro does quite well for a phone of this type.[b]Dynamic Range[b]This test is designed to test a phone's ability to play sounds at different volume levels. Here too, the phones must be as close as possible to the reference.
This phone is capable of producing sound of equivalent power to other phones in this price range, I haven't noticed any significant sound distortion even when the volume is at maximum. Umidigi has made good progress, the sound quality has improved a lot over the years. I even think they use a sound chipset also used by Xiaomi so the measurements are so close.[b]Noise Level[b]This test aims to identify if the device under test is able to reproduce sounds without too much noise. A high score indicates a low parasite rate, a lower score indicates a higher presence of parasites.
I did not notice any noise interference during my test.[b]

Screen quality

To test the screen, I use a colorimetric probe that measures the color accuracy of a screen, as well as other parameters to see if a screen is able to correctly reproduce an image. I also test the brightness level to determine if the screen will be able to display an image in full sunlight.[b]
Screen size : 6.3

Colorimetry[b]
Rugged phones are never very good when it comes to colorimetry and this is true again with this phone. I got a dE of 8.68 with bigger gaps in green / yellow. This kind of difference is not obvious when using the phone on a daily basis, but if you compare a photo on the phone screen with the same photo on a computer screen, the differences will be more noticeable.[b][b]Top 10 - ranking of the best screens by colorimetry

Note: the colorimetric difference is measured in dE. After three, the human eye will perceive a colorimetric difference, so the dE should be the lowest. The tests were all carried out with a colorimetric probe.
[b]Brightness / Contrast[b]Rugged phones are made to be used outdoors and as a rule the brightness produced by the screen is quite strong. I got a brightness of 275 cd / m² with the brightness at maximum and without adaptive brightness. It is really very little and very clearly insufficient to make the screen readable under the sun. I then activated the adaptive brightness and flooding the sensor with light and I got a brightness of 370 cd / m², it is already better but it is still insufficient. Ideally, more than 500 cd / m² would be needed for good readability in direct sunlight. [b][b] I got a contrast of 1256: 1, it's a normal contrast for this type of screen so no problem there.[b]

Biometry

Umidigi made a very curious choice for the placement of their fingerprint sensor, this sensor is located on the left of the phone! You must therefore pass your hand behind the phone and hope to have a finger long enough to cover the fingerprint sensor. I have big hands so I didn't really have any issues but it is an inconvenient position to unlock the phone.[b]

Operating system

[b]The Umidigi Bison Pro runs on Android 11 without overlay. Umidigi stays true to the base version of Android, so there are no ads or unwanted apps. The parameters are quite numerous but quite well classified. The particularity of this model is to be able to personalize the buttons to assign them the function of your choice such as for example assigning the thermometer or the camera. Overall Android 11 runs great on this Umidigi, I didn't encounter any issues during testing. [b]

Compare Umidigi Bison Pro with the others

I assigned a score of 1 to 10 for each test that determines the strengths and weaknesses of a product. I am using 0 for criteria that have not (yet) been tested. A score of 1 to 3 indicates poor performance (and yes, it does), a score of 4 to 6 indicates average performance, a score of 7 to 8 indicates good performance, and a score of 9 and 10 indicates exceptional performance. .
The score is calculated based on my measurements and when there are no measurements, it is a subjective opinion based on my experience.

The scores are not static, they change over time because the performance of new products changes and this must be taken into account.

Test / Review conclusion

[b]I still have to publish the night photos but the result of this test will not change the conclusion. With the Bison range, Umidigi has managed to make the rugged smartphone more accessible and I am not talking here about the price but also the exterior aspect. Rugged smartphones are generally quite ugly and very angular, the Umidigi Bison and its pro version have a much less harsh exterior appearance. Where this kind of phone is aimed at a more professional audience, the Bison Pro may well tempt a more traditional audience who tend to drop their phone. [b][b] For less than 160 € (November 2021), the Umidigi Bison Pro has slipped into the entry-level segment with a fairly interesting phone. Rugged phones generally cost more and sacrifice a lot in many ways. This is not necessarily the case with this phone. The Umidigi Bison Pro isn't a performance bully but at this price point it's often the same with other phones so I can't fault it. This phone will therefore target a more general audience who is not looking for performance or photo quality. The master of this segment remains for me the Redmi Note 10 but it does not offer waterproofing and is not protected against shocks. [b][b] The Umidigi Bison offers good battery life, good gps performance, decent sound quality (which is quite rare for this kind of phone) and an operating system without additions unwanted applications. It therefore has a more utilitarian vocation than a leisure-oriented phone like the Redmi Note 10. [b][b] The phone's biggest weakness is its sensitivity to the 4G network, it is a phone that will lose signal faster than average when network coverage is poorer. The screen has a visible color difference but since this phone is to be considered as a tool, this kind of problem should not prevent you from buying it. There is also the unknown when it comes to Umidigi's support, I haven't really encountered any big problems on Umidigi phones launched after 2020 but I regularly receive testimonials from customers disappointed with their phone because it presents a bug that appeared after an update. If you are in this case, I advise you to post a message on the official Umidigi forum as you will be able to expose your problem to the Umidigi community and support.
